A Day in the Life of A Wellpreneur On-The-Go!

Just a few years ago, I decided to venture out into the world of wellprenuership—launching Australia’s only dedicated wellness travel agency Health and Fitness Travel, combining my passion for travel and knowledge in health and well-being. I really enjoy being my own boss and the ability to work anywhere with the support of our global team is priceless. But unlike what you might think, I don’t simply spend my day talking about dreamy holiday destinations…

Being in the business of wellness travel isn’t all about sipping detox juice by the beach, yoga  classes and spa treatments. No matter how fun and easy it may all seem to be, entrepreneurship and creating a new niche industry requires a lot of work, but loving what you do and building a business is incredibly rewarding.

Part of my role involves visiting prospective suppliers and existing partner retreats across the globe. It is a great perk but means fitting a whole workday around a day on retreat. To give you an idea of how it all looks like, let me share a preview of recent schedule on route to our offices in London.Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 1.51.02 pm

Here’s is my day at Madinat Jumeirah, a luxurious 5-star resort in Dubai, the largest resort in the Emirate, designed to resemble a traditional Arabian town and with it’s own private beach. 

6:00am – 7:00am: Wake, meditate, shower and order healthy breakfast to room.

The morning starts with meditation almost as soon as I wake up. While meditation can be of help any time of the day, I make it a point to do this in the morning to prime myself up for the busy day ahead.

7:00am – 10:00am: Meet with staff in different time zones and action emails requiring my attention.

I have to plan ahead when travelling to account for specific time zones for communications with our global partner resorts, clients, and staff.. I normally action emails requiring my attention first thing in order to allocate tasks early on and respond to any client or staff needs in a timely manner.

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 1.54.07 pm10:15am- 11:15am: Review fitness facilities and then have a PT put me through my paces with a fitness evaluation just like our clients might experience.

11:45am –1:00 pm: Site inspection of award winning Talise spa facilities followed by a spa treatment.

I enjoy a therapeutic treatment and relax in the Alphasphere Deluxe sensory room, this unique treatment focuses on all the human senses for a simultaneous perception of Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 1.57.44 pmsound, colour, light, vibration, touch, temperature and smell to induce a state of calm. 

The items above are just some of the most fun yet most vital part of getting a new partner resort. It is important to understand consumer experience first hand for us to evaluate whether or not it meets our typical clientele’s needs, to know what improvements should be done, and of course, for us to know how to sell it to our customers. 

1:00pm – 2:00pm: Meet with the Director of Spa and Wellness for lunch and strategy meeting

When short on time lunch meetings are perfect to make the most of a schedule. It’s a great way to share an experience whilst doing something productive. We enjoy a sample of the specially designed healthy spa cuisine delivered to one of the newly refurbished couples suites to escape the midday heat and discuss the plans to expand the wellness offerings at Jumerah and the trends in Dubai.

2:00pm – 6:00pm: Back to work

Even on-the-go, it’s business as usual. Although it varies from day to day, I always find time to wear many hats of entrepreneurship, this can range from overseeing our financials, signing off on contracts, and staying in touch with industry trends as well as staff management. Being my own boss also means I have to be on top of everything.

6:30pm – 7:30pm: Sunset Yoga

Yoga is an important activity in my work week and I like to take part whenever I can. It helps me wind down and with the added perk of being on location, it’s just surreal.

8:00pm – 8:30pm: Light dinner on the balcony in my room, soaking up the heat and enjoying the view!

8:30 pm -9:30pm: Post dinner I check in again and action any emails that require attention, pack my bags and request a wake-up call for my early on-ward transfer to airport next day.

10:00 pm Switch off for sleep

Although the day seems to be packed full of activities, I work hard to make sure I stay healthy and balanced. I try to stick to a schedule, fitting in some to pause, exercise, hydrate and rest. And when it’s time for bed, I put away all electronics for some real tech detox time and have a satisfying good night sleep.
