Why Not All Business Advice is Good Advice
It never fails, you start something new or things start going well for you and suddenly everyone finds himself or herself an expert on your life and what is best for you. Here are some tips on when you should listen to other’s advice about your business and career and when to simple let it go in one ear and out the other.
There is a time and a place for everything. You will want to consider listening to advice given at a networking meeting with other like-minded professionals during the day, but avoid taking the advice from the drunken gentleman at the bar at 2am. People at networking meeting are there for business, the local tavern in the middle of the night…not so much. If the person at the bar is insistent on “talking shop”, offer to set up an appointment to discuss business in a business setting such as over coffee or lunch. Not only will it be more productive but it will also allow you time to do your due diligence on the person wanting to give you advice.
Look at the experience and expertise of the individual; make sure they have the credentials to back what they are talking about. Avoid know-it-alls and self-proclaimed gurus who think they know everything. No one person is an expert in every field, no matter how much they talk and like to hear their own voice. Just as you wouldn’t ask a man for pregnancy advice, you wouldn’t ask an accountant for sales advice.
Sadly there are people out there who have ulterior motives for everything they do. Not every piece of advice is given with kind intentions and expectations to set you up for success. Find out why the person is giving you advice; is it because they could possibly partner with you on project and you could be successful together or is it something negative such as setting you up for failure? People can be sneaky, so do your homework on the person giving the advice before ever taking it.
Avoid attention seekers and people who simply want a hand in everything. They will try and take credit for your success and attempt to pull the attention away from you and onto them, thus boosting their credentials. This form of advice is usually unsolicited and watered down with nonsense.
Take all advice with a grain of salt and be cautious of the overwhelming “expert opinions” that will come your way when you start a business. You might be new to being a business owner, but you’re not new to what works for you as a person and a professional.
Just as “it takes a village to raise a child”, it takes a community of like-minded brilliant individuals sought on success to create a profitable community. Successful people know that they cannot be successful without other successful people, so keep your eye out for advice from people who have already made it and who have helped others succeed too, they are the ones you want to listen to.
